History

‘R.H. Cains Chemist’ as it was known over 95 years ago, was established in Grandview Street Pymble in 1915.

The Cains family was one of the first families to purchase land and settle in the suburb of Pymble. At this time, this suburb was mainly filled with fruit orchards within large holdings of private land. In 1915, with his brother being sent off to World War I, Robert Harold (R.H.) Cains decided to start his chemist shop in Grandview Street.

For more than 70 years the pharmacy was owned and managed by the Cains family - Originally, Mr R.H. Cains and then his two sons Peter and Robert Jnr who, up until around 1954, lived in the accommodation above the pharmacy.

Growing up in the shadow of their father, Peter and Robert Jr learned the pharmacy trade and eventually took over the family business.

The year 1984 saw the end of the Cains family’s long association with Pymble. The pharmacy business – at that time known simply as ‘Cains Pharmacy’ – was sold to Russell Prichard.

Until 2005, the pharmacy now with its current name ‘Pymble Pharmacy’ moved to 73 Grandview Street and the business was sold to Matthew Burton.

The pharmacy was relocated to 99-101 Grandview Street, Pymble in 2011 and now accommodates a larger retail space and incorporates the new ‘Pymble Family Doctors’ medical practice.
